Standing notice

Disclaimer

The standing statement that applies to every page of this reference.

This portal is a theoretical reference on communication standards. It is not affiliated with ISO/IEC MPEG or Via LA. No packages, files or products are distributed or hosted. For educational and scientific study only; no financial, brokerage or broadcasting services are provided.

Reading of the statement

The statement above appears on the first screen of the home page and in the title block of every page, so that a reader meets it before relying on anything in the text. It has three parts. The first identifies the reference as a theoretical account of communication standards. The second states that the office is independent of the bodies whose work it describes. The third makes plain that the reference distributes nothing and operates no service of any kind.

Independence

The editorial office is not affiliated with ISO/IEC MPEG, with the ITU-T, with any alliance of technology firms, or with any licensor of the standards it discusses. It receives no sponsorship and accepts no payment for coverage. Where a standard or a body is named, the name identifies the subject of study; it does not imply endorsement, agency or any other connection with the owner of the name.

No distribution of materials

The reference hosts no files and distributes no packages. It does not offer anything for a reader to obtain, and it operates no financial, brokerage or broadcasting service. A reader who needs the formal text of a standard should obtain it from its issuing body. This reference is a companion to that reading, not a substitute for it.

No professional guidance

Nothing in this reference is professional guidance for any particular arrangement, and no result is promised from following a description. The figures given for bitrate, efficiency and data volume are representative and depend on the content and on the encoding parameters in use. Before acting on any figure for a formal purpose, a reader should confirm it against the published standard and against measurements of their own material.

Limitation

The reference is offered as it stands. The editorial office takes care to be accurate and corrects what it finds to be wrong, but it accepts no liability for a loss arising from reliance on the text. Where the sources differ, the reference reports the disagreement rather than resolving it silently, and the reader is left to judge. A correction that narrows such a disagreement is welcome and can be sent through the contact page.

Standing nature of this notice

This disclaimer is not a page a reader visits once and leaves behind. It is the standing notice of the publication, and its text is repeated in the title block of every sheet, so that no reader can begin to rely on a figure without having met the statement first. The notice is written to be read, not to be buried: it is short, it is in plain language, and it says exactly what the reference is and what it is not.

Three consequences follow from it. A reader should treat the reference as a guide to understanding and not as a substitute for the published standard. A reader should expect the figures for bitrate and efficiency to be representative rather than exact, because those quantities depend on the content and on the encoding parameters in use. And a reader should know that the office holds no commercial interest in any of the material it describes, so the account is offered without a hidden purpose.

Acceptance

By reading a page of this reference, a reader accepts the statement above and the conditions that accompany it. Together with the privacy policy, the terms of use and the cookie policy, this disclaimer forms the complete standing notice of the publication, and its revision is recorded in the title block so that one edition can be told from another.
